Boy (14) stabs another boy (15) to death at school

A 14-year-old Grade 3 pupil at St Joseph’s Primary School at Rehoboth stabbed to death another 15-year-old Grade 8 pupil on Tuesday.

The boy, who could not be named because he is a minor, was taken by the police.

It is not clear at this moment whether he will be kept in custody or released into his parents’ custody.

The education ministry executive director Sanet Steenkamp has confirmed the incident.

In a statement Tuesday, Steenkamp said the ministry is deeply pained by the loss of life in such a tragic manner.

Steenkamp said the ministry reaffirms that schools should be places of safety for both pupils and teachers where parents and guardians entrust their children’s education.

“Equally, the implementation of the National Safe School Framework should be re-enforced and strengthened in all schools across the country to ensure the prevention of systematic bullying and violence in schools,” Steenkamp said.

According to Steenkamp, the ministry realized that this traumatic incident could have a major impact on the emotional wellbeing and responses by all the affected.
