NamRA Commences Pilot Testing at Trans-Kalahari Border Posts

The Namibia Revenue Agency (NamRA) has begun pilot testing of the One Stop Border Post (OSBP) system at the Trans-Kalahari/Mamuno border posts, effective from 2 September 2024.

This initiative aims to streamline the clearance process for travellers and goods through a single border facility, using harmonised procedures between Namibia and Botswana.

According to NamRA, the OSBP is designed to reduce transit times, lower business costs, and improve the efficiency of trade and travel between the two countries.

Tonateni Shidhudhu, NamRA’s Manager of Strategic Communications and Stakeholder Engagements, encouraged stakeholders – including travellers, transport operators, clearing agents, and businesses – to familiarise themselves with the new procedures and take advantage of the improved services at the border post.

As part of the preparations for the launch, new infrastructure developments have been made at the Trans-Kalahari border.

These include a new commercial terminal, office block, and bypass roads.

The existing building has also been upgraded to accommodate passengers entering Namibia from Botswana.

On the Mamuno side, portable structures were erected earlier this year to facilitate the consolidated border procedures, involving both Namibia and Botswana border agencies.

Plans are underway to expand the existing building into a permanent terminal in the coming months.

Botswana Unified Revenue Service Commissioner General Jeanette Makgolo urged her team to ensure that the new permanent structure is completed and ready for operation within the next 12 months.

NamRA Commissioner Sam Shivute commended the project team for staying on track to meet the agreed timelines, following a recent extension.

Shivute highlighted that executing a bi-national project of this scale involves numerous stakeholders, requiring a high level of skill, dedication, and collaboration.

The Finance Ministers of Namibia and Botswana are expected to agree on the official launch date for the OSBP and appoint a host for the event.

This strategic development marks a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations between Namibia and Botswana, while fostering regional integration, enhancing customs operations, and boosting the competitiveness of the Trans-Kalahari Corridor.
