Police in the Kavango East region shot dead two members of a gang of armed robbers that was said to have been planning a robbery.
The shooting occurred at Ngarama-teya in Rundu Rural Constituency on Monday around 22h45.
Police also arrested two other suspects.
Deputy commissioner Bonifatius Kanyetu confirmed the shooting.
Kanyetu said the gang members were “trying to be fun with the guns”, and the police retaliated.
“On Monday, police, acting on a tip-off, managed to intercept a group of four men suspected to commit robbery at Mashare irrigation schemes. These suspects are habitual robbers who are known to the police. The four suspects had firearms and were equipped with tools related to robbery incidents at various sites,” Kanyetu said.
He said the suspects were stopped at a mini roadblock, but they did not comply and produced firearms in retaliation instead.
Kanyetu added that the gang had cases of murder and conspiracy to commit armed robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and possession of ammunition.
The police also found housebreaking implements in possession of the suspects.
According to Kanyetu, the police confiscated the tools.
The deceased details are withheld as the next-of-kin are still to be informed.
Police are still searching for the suspect’s associates while the investigation is ongoing.
