Nekongo speaks on appointment to National Assembly

Newly appointed National Assembly member and Swapo Party Youth League (SPYL) secretary, Ephraim Nekongo, said his appointment to the National Assembly by President Hage Geingob was a privilege.

The youth leader was sworn-in on Monday together with former information minister Joel Kaapanda, businesswoman Martha Namundjebo and unionist Festus Marenga.

Nekongo replaces former minister Jerry Ekandjo who resigned from the National Assembly early December 2019.

The others have replaced former ministers Bernhard Esau and Sacky Shanghala who were recalled as well as Sebastian Karupu who resigned.

The SPYL secretary hopes that Geingob will consider appointing a youthful parliamentarian in the next parliament to be appointed in March this year.

“It’s now up to the leadership of the party as I have indicated to you before that I think the party which is responsible will not ignore its young people.

“And I know for sure that the President will continue appointing young people. Now the question of whether it’s Nekongo or another young person that’s a different question that will come probably after the 21st.

“I think we have to thank the almighty God who has carried us throughout the past year and yes I was privileged to be appointed by the President to parliament and that is what I can say so far. Starting from today, I am a member of parliament,” Nekongo said.

Businesswoman Martha Namundjebo-Tilahun said she would go to uphold the country’s Constitution.

She also said that it was too early to say much at this point.
