Windhoek City acting chief executive officer Rekliff Kandjiriomuini has flatly denied offering a N$5 million bribe to RDP councillor Brunhilda Cornelius to drop down her objections for a 5G project that will involve Chinese tech behemoth, Huawei.
He said his conscience was clear.
“They are false! The reason is, she knows very well that she is a member of the council. So, she knows very well what has been approved and what has not been approved. So, she knows exactly. The allegations are just false,” said Kandjiriomuini via a telephonic conversation.
Eagle FM pressed on what could have been the motive behind Cornelius approaching the police and Al Jazeera if he thought this as false.
Kandjiriomuini is seen in a surveillance video footage meeting the councillor at a service station where he allegedly talked about offering the bribe for the project t sail through.
“I meet with many councillors. What is making this one a special meeting? That is a surveillance camera from a service station. I think what we will do from a city perspective is we will issue a media statement coming soon so the city can put its position. Right now, I can not dwell on this,” he said.
He added, “Where do I get the money to pay her if the project is not approved? She is just one out of 15 councillors. I have received what is running on social media. I know Al Jazeera contacted me and wanted to give me a deadline, (that) by yesterday I must answer. I said no I am having other work to do you can’t just force me to answer with time I am getting from where? And they decided to publish whatever they have published and it has nothing to do with me. l They wanted it to have something to do with me but my conscience is clear. I do not owe Al Jazeera an explanation,” he said.
Will he press for defamation charges?
“I will see how it goes. l I have work to focus on and I do not know if it is necessary to do that. As long as the public knows the truth the rest is immaterial to me.”
He also said he had no idea if the police were investigating him, “They will not let me know. They will not say we are now investigating you; they will do their homework. Do you know what they say? Thy shalt know the truth and truth shall set you free. That is what it is”.
