I need to clear my name – Fishrot-accused Gustavo

One of the Fishrot accused Ricardo Gustavo made a second court appearance in his formal bail application today.

He applied for bail in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court on Friday, before magistrate Johannes Shuuveni.

Gustavo, in his first appearance, testified that he is a man of integrity, and has never in his life stolen a cent from anyone. He said and that he needs to clear his name.

He will return to court on 3 June 2020.

In closing submissions, State State argued that there is sufficient public outcry for him to get bail. They also argued that they have made out a prima facie case against the Fishrot accused.

The defence argued that public outcry is not sufficient and that the state has not made a prima facie case. They also submitted that investigations are far from complete.

Gustavo who has been in police custody since his arrest on 27 November last year, is facing charges of bribery, fraud, money laundering and corruption.

His co-accused are former justice minister Sakeus Shanghala, former fisheries minister Bernhard Esau, former Investec Namibia managing director James Hatuikulipi and Esau’s son-in-law, Tamson Hatuikulipi.
