Former minister of education Katrina Hanse-Himarwa has hired one of South Africa best defence lawyers Barry Roux to represent her in a case where she is seeking leave to appeal a Windhoek High Court conviction.
Hanse-Himarwa, who was convicted on a charge under the Anti-Corruption Act in the Windhoek High Court last year, wants to appeal her conviction in the Supreme Court.
Judge Christie Liebenberg convicted the former education minister on a count of corruptly using an office or position to obtain gratification for herself or another person after finding there was “overwhelming evidence” showing that she was present at a meeting at Mariental on 16 December 2014.
Hanse-Himarwa also directed officials from the then housing ministry and the Mariental municipality to change a list of people selected to receive houses built at the Hardap town under the government’s mass housing development programme.
The former minister was sentenced to a N$50 000 bail or two years in jail. She paid the bail and indicated that she would take the case to the Supreme Court.
Judge Christie Liebenberg postponed the case to 3 February 2020 for judgement.
Known as Oscar Pistorious’ lawyer, Roux has also represented the charismatic prophet Shepherd Bushiri among many others.
