TThe City of Windhoek said it is not true that they spent N$13m on eight bakkies but that they indeed spent N$12,6m on 39 vehicles.
In a statement Friday, the City said they bought 19 bakkies, 18 sedans and two vans for N$12 624 730.
The denial comes even when the City police chief Abraham Kanime confirmed to the Windhoek Observer on Wednesday that they had spent N$13 million on eight vehicles – Ford Ranger models.
Kanime confirmed the acquisition of the vehicles saying the funds came from the Road Fund Administration (RFA).
“Even as we’re talking, we are still trying to see whether we can get money to buy more. We need mobility for us to deal with high road accidents. The vehicles that we are talking about are just for road safety. These are the ones bought with money given by the Road Fund Administration (RFA),” Kanime was quoted saying.
According to the statement, the city bought eight Corolla Conquests for N$2,1m; two Quantum minibuses for N$977 000; Toyota Double Cab for N$547 806; 10 Polo Vivos for N$2,3m; 7 Ford Ranger for N$2,7m; 11 Nissan NP200s for N$2,9m; and electric trailer with a mounted boom and telescope for N$1,1m.
The Windhoek CEO Robert Kahimise said in 2018, the council auctioned 104 vehicles that had been declared unfit.
