The Chinese Embassy in Namibia has broken silence on ongoing allegations that Africans, Namibian nationals included, in China were being evicted from homes out of fear that they may be spreading Covid-19.
This has led to a confrontation of the Chinese government by a number of African diplomats who have asked for an explanation.
Hellen Lu Hairong, spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in Namibia said this was not reflective of the stance of the Chinese Communist Party.
She could not accept or deny the authenticity of the racial attacks.
“The Corona Virus disease caught the world by surprise and has posted a major test for governance capacity to all government across the world and I think the Chinese government always puts people in the first place and gives top priority to people’s safety and health.
We attach importance to the safety and health of foreign nationals as well as our nationals in China. Since the outbreak, China has made every effort to meet the medical needs of foreign citizens, especially Namibian citizens and students in Chia. We provided timely treatment to those infected with the Coronavirus.
For example, during the outbreak of the pandemic, all schools in Wuhan, Hubei province have adopted strict and meticulous measures to contain the epidemic and have established special working groups to take care of international students,” she said.
