30 giraffes translocated from Waterberg Plateau Park

Thirty giraffes were translocated from Waterberg Plateau Park to two communal conservatives and a national park in June this year.

The translocation was done by the environment ministry together with the Giraffe Conservation Foundation.

Others involved in the translocation are Du Preez Wild with funding from the Giraffe Conservation Foundation and Wildlife Conservation Alliance.

According to a statement released Wednesday, the translocation is meant to boost the existing population and increase genetic diversity.

Thirteen were translocation to Mangetti National Park in Kavango West, three to Okongo Conservancy in Ohangwena and 14 to Doro !Nawas Conservancy in Kunene.

“The translocation was in response to the request by the conservancy committee to boost their small giraffe population with additional animals to improve the genetic diversity of giraffes in the area and also to increase the local tourism potential which would greatly benefit the conservancy sand all its member,” environment spokesperson Romeo Muyunda said.
