Lungu fires PS who said salary cuts are voluntary

FIRED… Chagwa Kasolo

The Zambian permanent secretary for information and broadcasting, Chanda Kasolo, who said that the proposed salary cuts by president Edgar Lungu are voluntary has been fired.

Lungu announced on 27 Dec 2019 that his salary and those of cabinet ministers as well as public enterprises bosses should be cut by anything from 15 per cent to 20 per cent.

These cuts, Lungu said, would cushion the ordinary people against the stinging poverty as well as the fuel and electricity tariffs.

Kasolo, however, responded to Lungu’s announcement saying that such a decision would be voluntary since civil servants are employed on contracts and that these cannot be changed.

The announcement that Kasolo had been fired was made in a press statement released by Lungu’s office on Monday.

Lungu did not say why he was terminating Kasolo’s employment apart from that he had done so as per the Zambian Constitution.

“I have decided to terminate your contract as the permanent secretary with immediate effect,” Lungu said in the terse statement.
