The public enterprises minister Leon Jooste has written to the acting fisheries minister Albert Kawana to remove James Hatuikulipi from the board of Fishcor for his involvement in a bribery scandal involving an Iceland company.

Jooste also said that the board should consider the immediate dismissal of the Fishcor chief executive officer Mike Nghipunya or suspend him with immediate effect pending further investigations.

National Fishing Corporation of Namibia (FISHCOR) was established on 27 December 1991 in terms of the National Fishing Corporation of Namibia Act, 1991 (act 28 of 1991) of the National Assembly which paved the way for the establishment of strategic partnerships.

Hatuikulipi is one of four people including former ministers Sacky Shanghala and Bernhard Esau as well as Tamson ‘Fitty’Hatuikulipi who were mentioned by Wikileaks as having benefitted from bribes paid by the Iceland company, Samherji over years.

Tamson is Esau’s son-in-law and James’ cousin.

Shanghala and Esau resigned on Wednesday after The Namibian had published the story and just before president Hage Geingob was about to fire them.

Hatuikulipi also resigned as the managing director of Investec Asset Management on Thursday.

In a letter dated 14 November 2019, Jooste said that he was recommending the removal of Hatuikulipi as per the Public Enterprises Act of 2015.

Jooste also said that Hatuiklipi should be removed as director of any Fishcor subsidiaries with immediate effect and that any form of power attorney should be taken away from him.

The minister further recommended that the board should meet and appoint a new chairperson from the existing members as well as appoint a suitable chief executive officer according to the Act.
