Investec Asset Management announced Thursday that their managing director James Hatuikulipi has resigned following allegations that he received bribes from an Iceland fishing company, Samherji.
Documents dumped by Wikileaks on its website on Monday mentioned the names of those involved in the scandal.
Hatuikulipi, Gustavo, Shanghala, Esau and Tamson ‘Fitty’ Hatuikulipi could have benefitted from a massive N$150m bribery scandal that involved fishing licences and quotas given to Angola by the Namibian government.
Tamson is Esau’s son-in-law and is also a cousin to James.
Hatuikulipi’s resignation from Investec Asset Management comes a day after Sacky Shanghala and Bernhard Esau resigned from their ministerial positions as justice and fisheries ministers respectively.
In an announcement Thursday, Investec Asset Management said Hatuikulipi had resigned with immediate effect and that another Investec employee, Ricardo Gustavo, who was also implicated in the corruption scandal had been suspended pending the outcome of an independent investigation.
The statement said although the alleged corrupt activities were conducted in private capacity, Investec Asset Management takes the allegation seriously.
“Our internal investigation into the matter is ongoing, and we remain open to cooperating with the authorities,” the statement further said.
