After recently discussing parastatals suspending female chief executive officers and managing directors, parliament came to the conclusion that they were a series of sexist attacks. However, shouldn’t we be able to label things as they are without playing the gender card in this day and age.
If we are trying to achieve equal gender representation on all spectrums why should we give special treatment to women in power? It is high time that we learn to call a spade a spade without hesitation.
If we are referring to Sara Naanda who was at Transnamib, Maria Nangolo-Rukoro who was at Namibia Training Authority and Theo Namises who was at Air Namibia, I think it would be fair to say that they reaped what they sowed.
On that note, we also need to acknowledge that some of these women were hit by the curse of parastatals. This is because we cannot blame a CEO who inherited a title from another failed CEO. Naanda, for instance, began her reign at TransNamib when it was already drowning in debt and operating on a minus.
It was up to her to pull her boss, the Minister of Works and Transport aside to tell him that these were the realities of the company. Instead, she waited for the harsh current to hit her before she could stand up for herself. If she did raise these concerns with her boss and they were ignored, then it was her job to place a resignation letter on her boss’s table instead of waiting to fall off the horse. Now she has to walk around with the label of “another failed Transnamib CEO.” She deceived herself in this case.
I think for the others, the same would have to apply. If your institution is not breaking even when it should be under your watch, you are supposed to have the courage to resign before you subject yourself to experiencing a humiliating suspension which usually leads to a permanent dismissal. All these CEOs could have voiced their issues even through a 3rd party. They were all too quick to divulge everything that is wrong, but this is only after the boards have cracked the whip and asked them to wait outside while they deliberate on whether to let them back on the team.
It cannot be an issue of gender or sexist attacks because as much as we have experienced the rotten apples we have also witnessed the work of Rosalia Martins-Ausiku from MVA and former Team Namibia boss lady, Daisry Mathias. We have also seen the superior work of Inge Zamwani-Kamwi who was at Namdeb and is now at state house with Mathias.
It would be an offense to women who successfully run parastatals to start giving special treatment to women because of their gender.
You can only be a target based on your performance and not your sex. Incompetency should not be sugar coated with such ridiculous comments and the person who saw this as a valid point should be ashamed.
