Skorpion Zinc employee dies

A contract employee at Skorpion Zinc died after he was fatally injured while performing routine maintenance work on Sunday afternoon.

Lukas Shikongo,40, Shikongo was employed as an Assistant Rigger and had been working at Skorpion since 2007. The Inspector of Mines and the police has been notified and an investigation into the cause of the incident is underway.

All activities within the affected area have been stopped until further notice. “On behalf of management and employees at Skorpion, I extend sincere condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of Mr Shikongo,” said Prasad Suryarao, General Manager at Skorpion Zinc. The General Manager said safety is their first priority at Skorpion and they will continue to strive to achieve Zero Harm within their operations. The Company is providing the necessary support to the family and colleagues who have been affected by this tragedy.
