Ombudsman to probe into shooting

The Prime Minister Dr Hage Geingob announced the Ombudsman has been tasked to investigate the recent death of the late Frieda Ndatipo.

The 26 year old Ndatipo’s death occurred last week following a shooting incident near SWAPO Party headquarters, during a confrontation with the struggle kids. The struggle kids have been camping in protest for yet to be clarified grievances in Katutura. Speaking during a press conference, Dr Geingob said, “An independent, credible, impartial and transparent investigation will be carried out in order to establish the truth as to what exactly happened.

I am, therefore, pleased to inform the nation that the Ombudsman, under the power vested in him by articles 91 and 92of the Namibian constitution, as well as the Ombudsman Act 1990, (Act no7 of 1990) is empowered to investigate an incident of this nature. Accordingly, the ombudsman has been requested to handle this matter,” The Prime Minister said.

He noted the government has full confidence in the ombudsman and trust the matter will be handled in an impartial and transparent manner. “Against this background, I call upon our citizens to render their full cooperation with the office of the ombudsman. I also call upon potential witnesses to come forward and give their evidence without fear of favour,” he added. He then called on the public not to prejudge the matter or the outcome of the investigation and rather urged patience and wait for the report of the Ombudsman.
