Cricket Namibia (CN) has hit back at former sponsor Mobile Telecommunication (MTC)’s claim of slow pace on quota system.
MTC recently ended its N$25m ten-year romance with CN, citing the cricket mother body’s failure to implement equal racial representatives in various cricket age groups as the main reason.
The mobile giant’s chief human capital & corporate affairs officer, Tim Ekandjo, had said the decision was based “on the slow pace of the quota system that MTC instructed Cricket Namibia to implement last year.”
But CN CEO, Graham McMillan and cricket development facilitator, Jona Ambuga, denied such allegations.
Said Ambuga, “We started the grassroots programme in 2010 in different towns where cricket had never been played before such as Rundu, Keetmanshoop, the coastal towns as well as the Omusati Region. For four years, we were looking at training coaches about the game and from there, our idea was to train them to carry it out at schools. How could MTC expect results within a short period of four to five years, if these coaches didn’t even know what cricket is?”
Cricket Namibia only receives N$50 000 from Government every year and McMillan said he holds no grudges against MTC, as CN has already found a sponsor.
“We have engaged with many potential sponsors. Obviously, it can be sad to part from a ten-year business relationship but one has to understand every aspect of the issue. We have no other option but to reduce our operational programmes, among others, the number of days and hours we spend on the youth programmes at schools,” said McMillan.
