FNB launches exciting banking app

In its quest to move away from traditional banking to a modern way of doing things, First National Bank (FNB) Namibia has come up with an innovative service; FNB banking application.
The chief executive officer (CEO), Ian Leyenaar, maintains traditional banking was not always the most convenient way of banking: “I still recall the old days of savings books and cheques and when going into a branch was the only way to deposit or withdraw money. Although these were much calmer times, they were also cumbersome. Therefore, with the demand on more convenient banking services, we had to move with time.”
The application allows customers to transfer funds, view detailed balances and transactional histories, locate the nearest ATMs or branches, make free calls, buy prepaid airtime and send free SMSes to other FNB banking app users and more.
Previously, FNB online banking clients could not do certain services on their cellphones. With the new app, all that is now possible.
Part of the innovative arms of the app includes a functionality called ‘geo payments’. It is a location-based person-to-person payment functionality where customers can find and pay other app users, without their banking details.
The app also includes the already existent e-wallet, which enables one to reach the underserviced and under-banked customers with a mobile money solution.
It provides access to banking to customers who would otherwise not easily access branch networks or those who wish to bank from home, the office or on-the-go.
“Thus far, we have already provided our customers with banking anywhere, anytime. That has, today, been enhanced with the launch of the FNB App and mobi-site. Mobile banking can help meet three primary needs; attracting and retaining customers, as well as delivering cost savings,” the CEO says.
Mobi-site has been created to cater for the clients who do not have smart phones. Otherwise, all smart phone owners who are customers of the bank can download the FNB banking app from their devices (Samsung, Blackberry Z10 or Q10, IPhone and all Android phones) in the app stores.
The app is also open to non-FNB customers to download and interact with other app users, albeit with limited functionality since the app would not be linked to an FNB account. However, they can benefit from receiving funds from app users.
A customer who is already registered with FNB online banking can, after downloading the app, just select ‘register’ and then enter their online banking user ID while those who do not have access to online banking  can use their ID numbers after which they get an option to enter their ATM card and pin number.
