Man gets eight years

A man was convicted for homicide in the Katutura Magistrate Court after being found guilty for killing a security guard in 2010.
Aron Goraseb, 20, was arrested that year alongside an alleged accomplice who was later discharged after it was proven that Goraseb was solely responsible for Joseph Handjodjo’s death.
On 1 August 2010, Goraseb and his friend were at a beer hole where the deceased used to work as a security guard. A fight broke out between Goraseb and Handjodjo and before it could be broken up, Handjodjo was lying on the ground with a 50mm wide cut on his head. Goraseb had hit him on the head with a stone causing the fatal injury.
When Goraseb appeared in court last week, he pleaded guilty to homicide even though he had denied the same charge last year.
“I had not intended to kill him. I only hit him as he had assaulted me first. I know that I exceeded the boundaries of self-defence,” he told the court.
His judgement and sentence were passed last week; he will be serving eight years in prison of which four of those have been suspended to five years on condition that he is not convicted of a similar crime.
