Secretaries of women’s wings of former liberation movements meet

Namibia is currently hosting a meeting of secretaries of women’s wings of former liberation movements in Southern Africa at the Safari Hotel in Windhoek.

While officiating the event, Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila said that Namibia is committed to ensuring lasting gender parity between men and women and also equal opportunities.

“Namibia has therefore introduced deliberate initiatives that promote and advance gender equality. One such initiative is the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare that started as a department under the Office of the President then. Another institution is the Women and Child Unit under the Namibian Police that is dedicated to deal with gender-based violence,” Kuugongelwa-Amadhila said.

She added that from a political perspective the Swapo party cemented its commitment to gender equality by changing the party’s constitution to embrace and adopt a zebra style in the election of members of central committee and politburo.

Former liberation struggle women that are in attendance came from, Zimbabwe, Tanzania; Mozambique; South Africa and Angola.
