Over 8 000 children receive social grants in Karas region

A total number of 8 061 children are receiving state social grants in //Karas region statistics provided by the office of the governor indicates. 

About 596 children are receiving foster grants while 2 734 receive special maintenance grants and 125 receive vulnerable grants of the total number of children on the social grants recipient list.  

A total number of 7 288 inhabitants are receiving N$1 200 monthly old age pension of which 1 165 are recipients of disability grants, statistics indicate.  

These monthly grants towards senior citizens and people with disabilities are transformational because they raise household income and benefits more people beyond direct benefit, the governor of Karas region, Lucia Basson has said. 

Furthermore, the poverty eradication ministry has concluded the Foodbank roll out consultations with the leadership. 

“The ministry and the region's leadership have identified towns of Keetmanshoop and Luderitz to kick start the program. We have started with recruitment and training of the street committees during the last quarter of 2017/18 financial year. The poverty ministry is at the final stage of completing the Foodbank eligible beneficiaries in two towns,” she said. 

She added that, "government is aware that there are many dimensions to poverty and hunger is one of them. Therefore the government has done an excellent work in rolling out  theFood bank to the region in order to minimise number of hungry stomachs in the region".
