A 56-year old Zion preacher based at Okandjatu Village near Okakarara is in police custody for fingering a 14-year old girl last week.
Okakarara Police Station Commander, Inspector Nabot Amakali, confirmed the arrest and Gabes Kandovazu court appearance.
"Yes the suspect appeared in court this week on a charge of rape. His hearing has been postponed to 27 April pending investigation and legal representation. He shall remain in the police custody until then as he wasn’t granted bail," said Inspector Amakali.
The girls’ guardian told The Villager that Kandovazu, who had just been transferred to the village, lured the two girls into his house on the pretext that he wanted them to help him with a needle.
The girls, both learners at Okandjatu Primary School, were on their way back from the church which they found closed. They then had detoured to Kandovazu’s house to ask why the church was closed.
The girls, the guardian said, obliged and the preacher asked the 14-year old to sit on his lap while sewing.
“The preacher started by fondling the minor’s breasts, gradually moving to her buttocks. He attempted to disrobe the minor, and when he failed, he then inserted his fingers in her vagina,” the guardian narrated.
The 13-year old girl fled and alerted the guardian when she realised what was happening.
"They ran to my house and related their ordeal to me. I had intentions of confronting him first, but I realised that he’d just try to talk me out of reporting the matter to the police" said the guardian.
She alerted the police and the preacher was arrested.Case CR 21/03/2012 was opened before Kandovazu appeared at the Okakarara Magistrate Court.
The girl is currently traumatised by the ordeal, said the girls’ guardian. "She dreamt about the man last night coming to her with a stick; she woke up screaming and kicking. The preacher is not from here, he has just been here for a little over a year," stated the guardian.
