PastorÔÇÖs kid (19) rapes woman (60)

by Chris-Paul

apreacher’s son and his friend, both 19, were arrested for raping a 60-year old woman at Mutara Village in Kavango Region last week.

A relative to the elderly woman, Maria Nanzamba said the teenagers raped the elderly woman while she was collecting fire wood.

She said the boys, who knew the elderly woman, followed her into the woods where they overpowered her, wrestled her to the ground before raping her.

“They watched her going to the bushes alone and followed her. Those boys are always in trouble and they must have been drinking,” said Nanzamba.

She added that the elderly woman reported the ordeal to people at home who alerted the police.

“She came home crying and fortunately, she identified the boys. She is deeply hurt and hasn’t been herself for days now. One of them is the son of a much respected man in our community,” said Nanzamba said.

They tried to run away but they were caught by members of the community who beat them up before handing them over to the police.

The preacher, Moses Kambayi confirmed the reports, expressing his disgust over the situation.

“It’s a very sad situation, very embarrassing in that my own kid who grew up in my house did that.

How do I look at the people in my congregation? Right now, I don’t know what to say except that I’m very angry at him,” said the preacher.

The preacher said, though it was a difficult thing to do, he plucked up the courage to speak to the victim’s family.

“It’s really a difficult thing to do.

At first, I didn’t know how to go about it.

I spoke to the family and they were very understanding, so we have decided to let the law take its course in this matter,” said the preacher.

He said he doesn’t know much about his son’s co-accused, though he admitted that he had seen him before.

His family could not be reached for comment and police reports could not confirm whether the culprits were under the influence of alcohol or not.

A rape case under CR 23/03/2012 has since been opened against the teenage boys.
